The category of multipurpose shoes is becoming more and more numerous and interesting. The Puma Deviate Nitro 2 is another great example of what a multipurpose shoe is, and even in this case with a full carbon fiber plate.
The Deviate Nitro 2 is a comfortable, responsive shoe that can be used for easy training days as well as for long runs, intervals and even the occasional race.
Well cushioned, good stability, high quality upper and very few drawbacks. That means that we will inevitably have to put some downside, because up to this moment the perfect shoe has not arrived to the market.
I did not try the first version of these Deviate, but I can tell you that this second version has all the arguments to be present in the closet of any runner, for the simple reason that it can become the shoe that everyone wants, from a comfortable running shoe to a competition shoe for the less demanding.
Admittedly, the list of specs can be scary or make you think it's not a shoe made for you. It's reading "carbon plate" and "supercritical Nitro foam" and automatically thinking it's a shoe made just for fast days.
And yes, it behaves well when we give it speed, but also when we go at slower paces. Running at gentle paces is perfectly possible both for cushioning and stability. Even in spite of the carbon plate, which offers enough flexibility for poder to carry those soft rhythms without being uncomfortable.
The upper of the Puma Deviate Nitro 2
The upper is comfortable and quite ventilated, but it does not become a competition type upper, which is practically negligible. However, it is very nice and cozy.
Made of mono mesh, Puma has not put too many reinforcements to keep the upper upright. Simply with the use of PWRTAPE, a curved strap in the arch area of the foot that provides enough structure to the upper.
In the front area Puma has used another couple of tricks to give structure to the mesh. We have a kind of strip, very similar to the feel of the PWRTAPE I just mentioned, and on the opposite side the puma logo. Its location is not random, it's there for a reason.
The lines on the outside of the shoe? They are also used for the same purpose, to give structure to the whole shoe.
The tongue is very well made. Just the right amount of padding, attached to the bottom of the shoe, thin, elastic... possibly the best part of the upper (and the rest is good). The laces are also quite nice and slide very well through the eyelets.
The collar is quite soft, comfortable and holds the foot well in the rear area without slipping at all. The heel is flexible, molding to the foot comfortably. In the first version some users complained of rubbing in the rear, personally I have not had any problem with them in this second version.
Nitro Elite midsole and carbon plate
The main changes in this Deviate Nitro 2 come precisely in the midsole, as now in addition to the Puma Nitro foam, it is combined with the Nitro Elite.
It is in the upper area where we find the Nitro Elite foam, a foam that combines EVA with Pebax. It is not as responsive as a ZoomX, but offers very good feel. The name "Nitro" comes from the process of creating the foam, in which the part is expanded by injecting nitrogen into it. The feel reminds me of Saucony's PWRRUN PB, but a bit softer and a bit more responsive.
Meanwhile the bottom area is composed of regular Nitro foam, which is not as responsive and lightweight, but is a way to reduce the overall price of the shoe.
That Nitro foam is the one that overshadows a bit the brilliant package, and without being a heavy shoe it is certainly above the weight of the most direct competition (the Saucony Endorphin Speed 3). On the scales the Puma Deviate Nitro 2 weighs in at 297 grams, while the Saucony Endorphin Speed 3 weighs in at only 258 grams.
What separates the two foams? The carbon plate, which is not 100% carbon but only in a 70%. It is an important detail because despite having the help of the plate for stability and propulsion, it is not aggressive at all.
It allows a bit of flexion and is not so demanding on the runner, which is what makes it a very versatile shoe. There is no problem running at light paces, it accepts them just as well as when we pick up the pace.
It is also forked at the front, making it somewhat more docile and elastic.
In terms of data we have a 6mm drop and a heel height of 36mm. Given the usual measurements nowadays, 1TP7We can consider it even "low" (remember, the maximum limit is 40mm marked by World Athletics).
Sole
Without resorting to big names like Continental, Michelin or any other tire manufacturer, the Pumagrip compound from the German brand performs very well.
Not only does it offer good performance on all types of surfaces, but it also performs very well on wet terrain.
I haven't raced in the rain (I haven't done it for a long time...), but I have had the opportunity to look for puddles and wet areas -like an F1 with intermediate tires- and at no time have I noticed any slippage, neither when making turns nor when tractioning.
There is quite a lot of rubber in the outsole. Maybe Puma 1TP7 could have risked a little more and reduced the amount of rubber to reduce the weight of the shoe. Even so, there are areas with visible foam, but in other shoes there is much more and nothing happens.
In the center of the shoe we have a recess that allows us to see the carbon plate, called by Puma as PWRPLATE.
The use of a quite prominent tread pattern stands out, something not very common in pure asphalt shoes, and it is also differentiated in the inner and outer part of the shoe. These are solutions that manufacturers use in their trail models, but they certainly do not "warm up their heads" when they are making asphalt soles.
The external part uses the classic rectangular heel, which offers good durability, while the central and internal part has a water drop type cleat. They are also directional, proof that Puma has spent more than 5 minutes designing this outsole.
Those lugs give us more traction on surfaces that are not smooth, so you can train on dirt without any problem.
In short, all technicalities and technologies aside, Pumagrip has remarkable grip on any type of surface and all without compromising durability or comfort. And that's basically what you want to know.

Review Puma Deviate Nitro 2
I always tell you that all products have things to criticize. Decisions that have been made for X reasons that more or less spoil the overall package. It may be the choice of materials to reduce the price, or it may be the price for having chosen certain materials.
The truth is that with the Puma Deviate Nitro 2 I don't have too much to complain about. It's a very good shoe as a whole, and if I have to put a negative point it's the weight. But not because it's heavy, but because its competitors are lighter.
That there are shoes that perform better for running? That they are not the fastest when we think of a competition? Of course they are. But this is the perfect definition of what a multipurpose shoe should be. And among the all-rounders, it's possibly the best of them all.
Comfortable when riding smoothly, good response when we want to pick up the pace and it is not uncomfortable to maintain high rhythms. And on top of all this it is very reasonably priced for what is usual in the market.
No matter what kind of runner you are or the pace you run, I'm sure that the Deviate Nitro 2 is a shoe that will appeal to everyone who tries it, regardless of their level as a runner.
And with that... thanks for reading!
