Today Garmin finally begins to present new watches for 2020. After a year in which it has remained rather silent, it is time to renew the access model for the triathlon range. This new Garmin Forerunner 745 comes to make a much-needed renovation of the Garmin Forerunner 735XTpresented in 2016.
It is unusual for a Garmin watch to remain in the catalog for more than 4 years without replacement or update, but the fact is that the 735XT was a model that perfectly covered the segment it was intended for, although everyone could clearly see it was due for replacement, especially in terms of materials.
Although aesthetically the Forerunner 745 may look the same as the Forerunner 745, the Forerunner 245The new model is slightly larger and with a diameter of 43.8mm is halfway between the FR245 (42.3mm) and the FR945 (47mm). So it does not follow the same trend that Garmin followed with the 735XT, which was equal to the 230/235.
Beyond aesthetics, the Forerunner 745 incorporates a novelty in the range of Garmin watches: the suggestion of workouts. This is a new function of Firstbeat (now owned by Garmin) and which premiered with the Garmin Edge 1030 Plus. But in this case the training suggestion will be for both cycling and running.
But well, let's go through all the details.
Garmin Forerunner 745: Specifications
These are the full specs of the new Garmin Forerunner 745. As I always do, I'll give you a quick list so you can review them perfectly, and I'll go into more specific details later.
- 43.8mm diameter case, with a thickness of 13.7mm (for reference, 1.5mm more than the FR245).
- 1.2″ screen and 240×240 pixels, the most common in Garmin in recent years.
- 47 grams of weight, the watch is made entirely of fiber reinforced polymer (plastic).
- 22mm silicone strap with quickfit
- Battery life: up to 16 hours with use of GPS, only 6 hours if we are also listening to music. It can be extended up to 21 hours with UltraTrac mode.
- Pulse Ox, heart rate sensor with blood oxygen saturation estimation (SpO2).
- Barometric altimeter.
- Compass, gyroscope, accelerometer and thermometer.
- Daily training suggestions for cycling and running depending on your VO2max, previous workouts and fatigue.
- Compatible with Garmin Coach, the Garmin training platform
- Full Firstbeat metrics package: Recovery time, training effect, training load, training status, VO2max estimation, performance, etc.
- Route navigation (but without maps).
- Music playback, both downloaded to the watch and synchronized via online platforms with Connect IQ apps (e.g. Spotify or Amazon Music).
- Wireless payments thanks to Garmin Pay.
- Sync via WiFi or Bluetooth
In short, there are no major new features other than the training suggestions function. Since it is a new function, I will detail it later.
In the FR745 Garmin does not make the same mistake as with the 735XT and has included all the sensors, including the barometric altimeter (the great forgotten of the previous model). We also have route navigation, but they will be without maps, something that is reserved for the highest range, for the moment the FR945 and then the FR955 when it is presented.
It should also be noted that it also incorporates music playback and WiFi connectivity, so there is no specific Music finish with these functions. Also wireless payments through Garmin Pay.
Where perhaps Garmin has fallen short is in the autonomy of the watch. The maximum autonomy is 16 hours with GPS recording every second (although additionally pod can reach up to 21 hours with UltraTrac mode). It is true that it is a more than enough autonomy for almost any competition including Ironman, but it falls somewhat short seeing what the competition offers.
Garmin Forerunner 745, the training suggestions
Beyond the hardware specs, the FR745's most striking feature is the training suggestions. The watch gives you daily guided workout recommendations for running and cycling, tailored specifically for you based on your VO2max, your load and your training status.
We already saw this feature released in the Garmin Edge 1030 Plus, but logically in that case it only covered cycling workouts. The 745 will give you not only cycling workouts (with power targets, so it is essential to have a potentiometer on the bike), but also running workouts, which is the main novelty.
This is a function similar to the one Polar has with Fitspark in which, taking into account past workouts and load, it will suggest a workout to do that day. This suggestion will be offered to you by the watch when you go to do a training session, and it will be your choice if you follow that training session or if you prefer to do something on your own.
This will be the case as long as we do not have any other training scheduled from external platforms (such as TrainingPeaks) or from the Garmin Coach calendar.
Once the training suggestion has been accepted, the watch will guide us through the training with the different objectives set.
New Garmin HRM-Pro sensor
Along with the Garmin Forerunner 745, we also have a new pectoral pulse sensor. This is the Garmin HRM-Pro, a sensor equal to the old Garmin HRM-Pro. HRM-Tri but now offering Bluetooth compatibility in addition to ANT+.
Thanks to the Bluetooth 1TP10 compatibility, we will be able to use this sensor also with devices that only support this technology, but also with external applications such as Zwift.
And like the HRM-Tri, it also offers the other features: memory for swimming activities and accelerometer for running dynamics,
And it also supports running power with Garmin Power on the 745 thanks to the inclusion of barometric altimeter in the watch.
In short, it is the same as the HRM-Tri but offering Bluetooth connectivity and in green instead of blue. The price is exactly the same: 129€.
Availability and price of the Garmin FR745
Well, when will you get a Forerunner 745 and start preparing for the triathlons of 2021? From now, because it is already available for purchase.
It is priced at €499 and is available in four colors: black, white, red and green.
Garmin Forerunner 745 opinion
The Forerunner 745 was a long awaited renewal for the Garmin triathlon range. You will probably find the price too high, but not 1TP10We can compare it directly with respect to the 735XT. It was a model that had already been on the market for many years and has already received multiple price reductions (usually under €200).
The 745 is "another story". It is a much more complete watch where the only thing that separates it from the highest range are the maps for route navigation and a somewhat more extended autonomy. But it has two of the most differential functions of Garmin: music and wireless payments. And barometric altimeter, perhaps the forgotten element of the previous model.
But of course, we have the usual problem. 499 is the introductory price, and for very little more, we have the Forerunner 945.. Logically it does not have the function of training suggestions, but it does have maps for route navigation.
It is definitely a good remodeling, but as usual in Garmin, with a launch price perhaps too high. Is it the watch for you? Well, it will depend mainly on whether you are going to make use of its star function, the workout suggestion. Otherwise it would probably be more interesting to opt for the 945 with the maps and the greater autonomy.
And with that... thanks for reading!
