Español Update January 4th — CES is here, but it has arrived without the Fenix 7
There is less and less left for the Garmin Fenix 7 to become a reality. There will be three models: Garmin Epix 2, Garmin Fenix 7 and Garmin Fenix 7S. It seems that the Epix (Garmin resurrects that denomination again) will be the replacement for the Fenix 7X.
Winfuture.de has published some leaked images of all the models. The images you see below are hosted directly on their website and will continue to be displayed while they are hosted there. They are image galleries, so you can scroll through them.
Garmin Fenix 7
- The images of the Garmin Fenix 7 correspond to the Solar version. There will still be a standalone solar-powered version because you can see the inscription “SOLAR” on the back of the watch. Remember that the solar charge comes from the system called Powerglass, which is composed of the panel below the screen and, specially, from the ring around the screen.
That ring is much larger than in the Fenix 6 Solar, that should lead to an improvement in the autonomy provided by solar charging. - The screws that close the bezel to the watch are in a different place, which are now positioned at the ends where the strap is attached. That leaves a cleaner, less coarse-looking bezel.
- There is a new screen for “Stamina”. It looks like it will use the Body Battery algorithm during activity on a new screen.
- Garmin continues to use steel for the Fenix 7, but this time it is 316L certified. That means it's certified against corrosion.
- Speaking of meeting certifications, both Fenix 7 and Epix meet the Mil-Std-810G military durability standard.
- The main button area has been redesigned.
- Although it may seem from the brightness of the screens that it is an AMOLED screen, we must not forget that it is a rendered image. It still holds a “Light” button, so in none of these three models can we expect a screen that is not transflective. That's not to say that there can't be some specific model with AMOLED.
- Same sizes remain: 42mm for Fenix 7S and 47mm for Fenix 7. Presumably the Epix is the 51mm model.
- As expected, the use of the Garmin Elevate v4 optical sensor is confirmed

That the Garmin Fenix 7 is already close to launch is somewhat obvious. Garmin is faithful to their release cycle, and the usual renewal period for its Fenix series has usually been every two years. The Garmin Fenix 6 series were released in August 2019, while in summer 2020 the range was slightly renewed with the inclusion of Garmin Fenix 6 Solar, adding the solar charge that was previously only available in the top of the range Fenix 6X Pro Solar.
So it's been two years without a major renovation of Garmin's most successful watch, and a year without having had a “refreshment” of the range. As the market works today (for better or worse), it is quite a long term.
Through all this time Garmin has launched different products that can give us a good idea of where they are heading. Probably all eyes are focused on the latest two high-end models, of which we are likely to be able to see things in the new Fenix 7 series: LTE connection that premiered with the Garmin Forerunner 945 LTE and brutal autonomy, as they showed with the Garmin Enduro.
But they are not the only ones to look at... Recently the Garmin Venu 2 has also been released, with a breakthrough with respect to the AMOLED display and battery life, changes in the UI that improve its use...
In short, there are many possibilities if we look at what Garmin has been working on in these two years. And knowing that the American manufacturer usually “reuses” many of the features in different ranges, the most logical thing is that what we have been seeing, will be present in the new model.

Garmin Fenix 7 specifications
Below I will detail the possible new additions we can find in the future Garmin Fenix 7, ordered by what I consider most likely to greater doubts about it.
LTE conectivity
100% probability
I have no doubt that LTE connectivity is coming to the Fenix 7. Maybe not to the whole range (keeping it for Pro models), but much of it.
It is clear that with LTE, Garmin has a differentiating element with all its rivals. None of them have the ability to offer something like that and it's another factor that they can exploit perfectly. The launch of the Garmin Forerunner 945 LTE took place very recently and it is the one that has opened and consolidated all the necessary structure of contracts with the different operators in each country, features offered thanks to this connectivity, etc.
Garmin has worked hard on this feature and it is obvious that it will gradually reach all the high-end models of the manufacturer. That's the top of the range Forerunner and the Fenix watches, and in the Edge range of cyclocomputers it won't take long to see the Garmin Edge 1040 LTE.
Adventure Race activity profile
100% probability
This is a safe bet, because that is what has just been added to the beta version of the Fenix 6. It is a specific profile for orientation-type races in which the use of a GPS is not allowed to know navigation data, distance traveled, positioning, etc.
However, it does allow us to have all the data of the activity, track and absolutely all the details.
As I say, it has just been incorporated into the August 5 beta, coming soon on your nearest Garmin Fenix 7 (and of course in the official version of the Fenix 6).
New optical heart rate sensor
100% probability
Another safe bet. The Garmin Fenix 7 will come with the Garmin Elevate v4 sensor that premiered with Venu 2 and is also present on the Forerunner 945 LTE. It's a no-brainer.
Solar charging throughout the Fenix 7 range
85% Probability
That's what the Garmin trend shows us with all the models it has been launching. What was the premiere of the highest model in the range (the X), in the next generation was adopted by the entire range. Let's go back in time...
- Garmin Fenix 5X: It added maps for navigation. It became standard on all Fenix 5 Plus.
- Garmin Fenix 5X Plus: New sensor with blood oxygen saturation estimation. Again, it's something that in the Fenix 6 was added to the entire range.
- Garmin Fenix 6X Pro Solar: It was the first Garmin watch with solar charge. It arrived last year to the rest of the range under the commercial name “Solar”, for all models and paying an extra fee.
Really the change was the last year's launch of the Solar range to the entire family, something that had not occurred before. But I think you can clearly see what the trend is and what we can expect in Fenix 7.
My bet is they will remove the name Solar and become part of the feature sheet for all models. On one hand because it is no longer “so new”. And on the other hand, to lighten the load of SKUs, because currently considering the different sizes, functions, features and colors there are a total of 28 different Garmin Fenix 6 models. Totally unacceptable for any distribution channel other than Garmin directly.
Dual-frequency GNSS chipset in Garmin Fenix 7

The chipset has been on the market for a year, so Garmin has had time to test it and adapt it to its new model. It's just a matter of time before it's a feature we're seeing in the new models that are being introduced in the near future. And the truth is, the Garmin Fenix 7 is the perfect base to be the first Garmin to use it.
What are the benefits of dual-frequency? Dual-frequency systems allow improved positioning in locations with hard reception such as forests, cities where the signal bounces off buildings, etc. By receiving information from more than one radio signal from each satellite, the device can differentiate between real and bounced signal.
By using it (obviously with higher battery consumption) we will have better records of satellite data. It's not just that we're going to have nicer tracks after syncing our activity, both pace and distance during the workout will be more reliable as we are not exposed to so many reception errors in more complicated reception areas.
Smaller size and weight
75% Probability
The reduction in size is the trend we are seeing in the latest models of all brands. It can make you think that the reason is to make the watch more comfortable on the wrist. And yes, that is one of the reasons, but above that is the weight.
With lower weight, the optical HR sensor works better because there are fewer parasitic movements produced by vibrations. The technology of heart rate estimation through photoplethysmography is already highly developed, as can be seen in external pulse sensors such as the Polar Verity Sense. It is a very reliable option within external HR sensors both for it's location and weight.
The aim of manufacturers is to achieve lighter watches in which the optical sensor operation, within the difficulties of the wrist, is more accurate. And one way to achieve this is by making them smaller.
But this size reduction is not done at the cost of making the screen smaller, but by reducing the bezel of the watch. We've already seen it with the Garmin Forerunner 945 LTE (same screen as the 945 but 2.6 mm millimeters less in diameter), and also with the Fenix since the 5S Plus (same screen as the 5 Plus, but much smaller diameter).
Nylon strap
75% Probability
And continuing with weight reduction, another point where you can save a few grams and improve the fit on the wrist is with the nylon strap. And Garmin already has experience in this regard, with the strap found on the Garmin Enduro.
It would be no wonder if we could see such a strap in one of the versions of the new Garmin Fenix 7.
Higher battery life
65% Probability
That Garmin is able to offer brutal battery life has become clear after the Garmin Enduro. What I'm not so sure is that the intention is to take those changes to other models in the range or to reserve that feature exclusively to that Enduro family that they have released this year.
Here Garmin has two options: continue with a product family focused on maximizing battery life or applying those changes to other products in other ranges, leaving the Enduro as the source.
AMOLED screen
30% Probability
It's something that has been rumored on many occasions and that came out again with the launch of the Garmin Venu 2 and all the work Garmin did for its user interface.
More than technical needs, the reason would be because of the pressure exerted by smartwatches like Apple Watch. Many would like to have a quality display on a watch with the sporting features of a Garmin Fenix. And the changes Garmin has made with Connect IQ4 regarding AMOLED displays indicate that it will not be reduced to a single model within the range.
Look, It's not a matter of whether it will come or not, but rather when will it do it. Although I think it is still too early for the entire Fenix range to go on to offer an AMOLED display, mainly for battery life reasons.
What I don't rule out is that they can release a version with a screen that uses this technology.
Others
There are many other things we can think about... but they already fall deeper into the elucubrations or remote possibilities. Running power, voice assistant...
There are a lot of things that Garmin could add to their new product, but obviously they are not going to add everything at once. The Fenix 7 is not going to be a revolution, it will be a simple evolution of the current model.
Garmin Fenix 7, release date and price
January 4th update
It's happening! I know for a fact that it is already being tested and that the release date of the new Garmin Fenix 7 will be at the beginning of 2022.
It did not occur during CES in Las Vegas (the date has been reserved for the Garmin Venu 2 Plus exclusively), but we are just a few weeks away from finally seeing it on the market. Mark the calendar for Tuesdays in February.

Obviously there's been no announcement yet about the Fenix 7 nor is there any new rumor; but if you ask me about a possible new release date, the next date to mark on the calendar is CES Las Vegas. Therefore, the new date would be January 4-5, 2022.

If it is useful to give a clue of the arrival of the Garmin Fenix 7 to the market, the Garmin Fenix 6 was launched during the UTMB Mont Blanc celebration, a race of which Garmin is a sponsor.
This year it will be held again from Monday, August 23. However, Garmin doesn't make presentations on Mondays (nor on Fridays), so my first date marked in the calendar would be August 24, 2021. And from there... any day could be good, especially if it's Tuesday.
As for its price, I'll pull back on memories again. I have no doubts that it will be more expensive than the Fenix 6 when it first came to the market, that's what has happened with all the models of the brand. Garmin justifies it by adding more and more features, and I don't think it's any different this time.
The Garmin Forerunner 945 LTE has risen 50€ compared to the original FR945, justified by the inclusion of the LTE connection (which Garmin will also take advantage of thanks to the monthly subscription). So I think that 50€ extra is a good idea of what we can expect with the new model.
So I don't think the prices of the Garmin Fenix 7 are going to be far from this:
- Garmin Fenix 7S: 699,99€
- Garmin Fenix 7: 699,99€
- Garmin Fenix 7X: 749,99€
These would be the prices for versions with LTE and probably solar charging, what we now know as the Pro version. I am not sure that Garmin launches, at least for now, a cheaper version to rival the cheaper models of other brands because for that you can still have the Fenix 6 on the market (fighting Polar Grit X, Suunto 9 Baro, COROS APEX Pro, etc.).

I don't think it's a mistake to buy a Fenix 6. When the Fenix 7 comes out it won't have any kind of discount and, if the possible new features are not going to be useful to you, we are talking about saving around 300€.
As for a Vivoactive 5, it's not clear to me that with the Venu SQ and Venu 2 that a new Vivoactive makes sense. I think Garmin's bet for that range is LCD and OLED displays, though of course I could be wrong.

Am I the only one who thinks that at the outdoor activity level there are no advantages to OLED screens? If I use Garmin it is precisely because of the transflectives.
It all depends on the nits capacity of the screen, and the truth is that they have improved a lot. At the level of representation of graphics, maps, etc. the difference is substantial. An Apple Watch in broad daylight looks perfect, what they have to find is the point between screen and autonomy.
That in the future there will be Fenix with AMOLED display I have no doubt. What I don't know is in which generation it will happen.
I guess because Garmin understands that the user of those profiles are in another market or brand.
With maps if or if, when you leave your usual area is a joy. I have the 945 and I am delighted.

For me, I've been thinking about this watch for a couple of years now:
- Very important: LTE connectivity and services.
- Important: The lowest weight and (I add one of my own), maximize the use of the sphere.
- Appreciable: The AMOLED screen if you do not sacrifice too much battery, and especially for the maps. Also the nylon strap.
- Irrelevant: The bigger battery (the one it has already seems to me to be cannon), solar charging, any new profile or new sensor.
- Rejected: The smaller size, I prefer the current size of the S to be maximized on the screen, as I mentioned before.
I meant the X, not the S, hehe.
I hope you are right Eduardo and the F7 comes out soon, but seeing how the brands are working in recent times without releasing new models, but bringing out updates of those on the market (945 LTE. Suunto 9 peak. Vatange V2) I have the feeling that until February 2022 the f7 will not be on sale or rather there will be no units in stock in Spain. I hope I'm wrong ; )

Sure it is not, but given that no major launches are being made for the CES show in Las Vegas (and with the pandemic, in any other), it would be logical to have it for before that date and take advantage of that sales campaign.

I've been waiting all this week of the UTMB waiting to see if the Fenix 7 could come out at once, but it seems that it has not come out, and I am strongly considering buying the vertix 2 and not wait any longer, I do not know what you think. Basically because I need a mountain watch now!
I think the other thing the pro has its Pro Pace. This is very useful when working out, I'm told it helps with keeping with the pace more efficiently.
I'm looking forward to buying my 1st fenix, I waited and saved for the 7 to come out.

PacePro is available both in the Fenix 6 and Fenix 6 Pro. The difference is on the Pro you can do it on the watch, but on the Fenix 6 only with the app.
I Hope they release it soon. I'm due to upgrade my Fenix 3. I would like to see solar charging capability to at least maintain and possibly increase charge in basic watch mode. If this isn't available, i'll gladly get the discounted 6X solar.

I have absolutely no idea... Garmin MARQ was a new product line to see how it would work in the market, and they only released it once, so we don't really have any clue as to how long does Garmin estimate it's life time.
We are in September and no words on release. Internet is full of multiple information about the release of fenix 7 in August(past), September, Spring 2022.

Good to see some nice features and upgrades. I love my Fenix5 plus, however the HR monitor is so unreliable it skews my workout intensity massively. I hope the upgrade is much improved on the Fenix7

I really hope no AMOLED screen for the Fenix 7, I have a Venu 2, the AMOLED screen is trash, utter garbage, and completely useless. On top of that, it's tacky, reminding me of a JDM tuned car with underglow lights. I am sorry but for a smartwatch costing upwards of $700 I'd rather have a Mercedes-type understated screen feel and not a tacky overexposed color. Lastly, I don't like it because when I work out, I cannot see the screen and I have to turn the arm to turn on the screen, which works about 50% of the time during an activity like running or weight lifting. I am thinking of getting the Fenix 6 Pro today just to ditch the awful Venu 2 screen, even though the Venu 2 is the newer watch with the more accurate Elevate 4 sensor. Just to give you a hint of how bad AMOLED is for a smartwatch, so far I only know the Apple watch that managed to do well, by always having it always on, but that comes at the price of battery life.

Buying the Fenix 6 is still a good option, especially considering the price difference that is going to exist when the 7 is released.
I bought the Forerunner 55 instead of getting the Fenix 6 Pro today. I will wait for the 7. It doesn't make sense to pay so much for a 2 year old watch for someone just getting into smart watches. Do you agree?
It's totally different market the one you have in the US to the one we have in Europe. In the States you have MSRP, so I totally agree that, without discounts, it's kind of risky to buy a Fenix 6 Pro right now. Meanwhile in Europe retailers can set the price they want, so Fenix 6 is way cheaper than it was once it was first released. So the price difference between the Fenix 6 Pro now and the Fenix 7 when it's released is going to be quite significant.
Bottomline, I think you made the right move especially if you are just a beginner. Use the Forerunner 55, get to know it and what features you need, and then decide what is right for you.

Very interesting article & thanks for writing. My fenix 3 has finally kicked the bucket and wont charge. Of course garmin will replace it but for a nice €154 charge!!!! Looking at buying the 6x pro sonar as want a nice titanium strap for work reasons (in a suit all day!) but know once i purchase the 7 will have a release date. Any updates/timelines you might have picked up ???? Thank you 🙂

Right now you have two choices: Go with the latest Fenix 6 Pro, or buy any other cheaper model and wait for the new release. I would go with the first option if the possible new features doesn't feel that important to you.
Thanks for the great article. But here we are in November, and the Fenix 7 isn't out yet. I lost my Fenix 5S Plus in August, and I haven't bought a replacement because I bought my 5 just weeks before the 6 came out, which really annoyed me. I have been running and swimming without my Garmin for a few months now. I'm so tempted to buy the 6, but I'm afraid I'll get burned again and the 7 will come out a few weeks after my purchase. Garmin is now advertising their Holiday Gift Guide, which I received in my inbox. That makes it seem likely that the 7 won't come out til 2022. If so, I hope it won't be until next summer because I don't think I can wait that long. What do you think?
There has been no further leaks or information. So right now it seems it won't be announced until next year.
The pandemic has been hard on hardware manufacturers and I'm sure this has been an issue for Garmin as well.
The activity start button now comes with a knurled which 1TP10It could point to a rotating crown as the chorus to move through menus or to zoom in on maps instead of the touch screen.

A couple of things stand out to me,
1º_ The Epix does not have the size of the fenix 6x but of the 6. Cutting the images of the fenix 6x and the Epix in half and joining them by adjusting both screens, the Epix is much bigger, however doing this with the fenix 6 the bezel sizes fit. I guess the difference between epix and fenix is the amoled screen... or maybe it's the new "non Pro" version.
2º_I find it strange that the value of the charged battery of the fenix 7s is only 10 days. This generation was supposed to reach similar data to the Enduro, compared to the 6X: 21d vs 50d, so the fenix 7s should have at least 20d since the 6s has 9d... maybe the amoled screen is on the Fenix??
3º_ The star/stop button is not big enough for poder to turn it, it is the same size as the one on the fenix 6 and it is not comfortable to hold it to turn it.
4º_ Cutting the lateral image of the fenix 7 and joining it to the fenix 6, a decrease in width of several millimeters can be appreciated. Good work Garmin
5º I love that the sensor is protected inside the casing, the one in my fenix 6 already has some scratches....
6º_I don't see any indication in the photos to suppose that there is a touch screen, we have to wait to find out for sure.
7º_Perhaps what I like least is that the reduction of the bezel has made the edges between the screen and the bezel larger than on the fenix 6. They could have made better use of that space, even so I like the design.
At this rate of leaks, we will soon find out about many things.

No, LTE is for activities and security only.
I think the feature that may be coming that is not mentioned in the article is the rotary knob for zooming in on maps (thanks Coros for the competition!!). From the pictures you can deduce that it may have it, and most likely Garmin, because of Coros competition with the Vertix 2, will add it to their Fenix range.
Just as I also believe that this time there will be no vanilla range and Pro range, the former being without maps - again I look at Coros, which for a lower price, not only brings maps (with less functionality, mind you), but also offers sapphire crystal and titanium casing at no extra cost. I doubt that Garmin will do the same, but they certainly won't release a Fenix 7 without maps. Rather I suspect there will be Fenix 7 in different sizes and corresponding LTE model. Plus material options of course.
It remains to be seen, as you point out, if all ranges will be solar. After all Garmin bet heavily on the technology and I doubt they will not implement it throughout the range ... and even more as a message of commitment to greater use of renewable energy in these times. Surely it developed the technology quite a bit and 1TP10We can see real and noticeable differences with solar charging. Here I think the new feature would be to implement a sapphire power glass (improvement of the one in the Tactix Delta).

There are only three models submitted to the FCC, the preliminary step for poder to launch a watch on the market. Those would correspond to 7S, 7 and 7X/Epix 2. Obviously all are assumptions, although in a few days we will know for sure.

One thing I'm finding strange not to find in any information is about LTE. Contrary to all my predictions it seems that there is not going to be a version with mobile connectivity, which surprises me because it is the Garmin watch where it makes the most sense, especially after having developed the whole platform.

At the moment there is no word on the Delta version of the 7, but as you say the normal version comes out first and the Tactic takes a few months to be launched on the market.
