Today, at least officially, the new Fitbit Versa 2It was introduced a couple of weeks ago, but it hasn't been released until today (and I haven't had time to tell you about it).
The launch date is not crucial, it has to be perfectly distributed and ordered in all the stores around the world for the highest sales campaign: Christmas.
It wasn't just the Fitbit Versa 2 that the American brand presented to us, the watch came with a new premium service under its arm.
But let's take it one step at a time and start by clarifying what's new with Fitbit Versa 2
New Fitbit Versa 2
At first glance it may seem that the Fitbit Versa and the Versa 2 are exactly the same watch and that nothing has changed. However there are two quite important new features: the new AMOLED display can always be on and includes Amazon Alexa.
They are the two main ones, but that doesn't mean they are the only ones. Here you can see the list with all the news:
- AMOLED display (replacing the LED display of the first Versa)
- Possibility to keep the display always on without affecting the autonomy too much
- Compatible with Amazon Alexa Virtual Assistant
- Includes microphone to use Alexa
- New, more powerful processor
- The buttons on the right side are removed, keeping only one on the left (just like the Versa Lite)
- Sleep Score: a show that had been in beta for months and is finally being released to the general public
- Smart alarm clock
AMOLED screen always on
Without a doubt, the most important news is the AMOLED screen, not because of the quality itself, whose resolution is similar to the original model, but because it allows you to enable a screen mode that is always on, exactly like the Apple Watch Series 5Or the Garmin VenuAnd with respect to those two, the Fitbit Versa 2 differs by price.
It seems to be the new trend in smart watches, and it will be especially so now that Apple has "popularized" it (if Apple has it, others have to have it). It all depends on opinions, but there is no doubt that it is useful.
By default (with the screen turned off when not looking) the autonomy is 5 days, dropping to only 2 if you make use of this possibility.
If you don't activate it, the screen will turn on exactly the same as before: with a twist of the wrist (which works quite well) or by pressing the button.
And what does the display show when it's always on? A low power clock display, simply showing the time along with basic battery and activity icons. And when you turn your wrist the display switches to showing the usual information.
Another feature that stands out in the Fitbit Versa 2 is Amazon Alexa, a virtual assistant, very similar to Siri or Google Assistant, which will allow you to make generic queries or add entries to the calendar.
The answers are just text on the clock display, as the Versa 2 has no internal speaker. And since it has no speaker, there is logically no support for making phone calls either.
Perhaps the most interesting aspect of Alexa is whether you have Alexa-compatible smart devices in the house (lights, sockets, speakers, etc.). In the end it's an ecosystem that connects everything together, so you could say to the clock "Alexa, turn on the bedroom light". And the light would magically come on.
New sleep functions
Sleep Score is released with the Fitbit Versa 2, but has been in previous tests on other models of the brand (it will come through an update to all heart rate sensor devices).
Similar to what is offered by the Polar IgniteThe Fitbit Versa 2 will give you a score to indicate how well you slept last night, based on a series of data it collects from its different sensors: heart rate, movement, breathing and sleep time.
Fitbit tries to determine if the hours of sleep you've had have helped you rest and regain energy. Each night it offers you a score, which is simply the combination of all those data into one number that is easy to compare between different days.
It will also offer tips on how to improve the rest period to maximize recovery.
As for the Smart Wake function, this is an intelligent alarm clock that will find the ideal moment to wake you up.
For example, you can specify that your wake-up time will be 7:00. The clock, as it is doing the analysis of your sleep, will look for the ideal time to wake up, that is, when you are in a light sleep period and not deeply asleep.
The rest of the functions
As for the rest of the functions, those we are already used to with Fitbit, for example the wireless payments through Fitbit Pay, which continues to add supported banks in Spain. clock notifications, training log, connected GPS function (the clock does not have GPS, but uses the one on the mobile phone to record the track and show rhythms and distances), submersible and compatible with swimming, applications and customization of the dial, Fitbit application...
Fitbit Versa 2 is, in short, an update of the original model that tries to renew the range. There are no important new features, because it does not need them either. It is a model that has sold quite well, in fact much better than the Fitbit Ionic.
We must not forget that the purchase of the device is not only the watch itself and what it includes, it is also the platform behind it. And in the segment of activity and active life monitoring with no other objective than keeping fit, Fitbit's is one of the best options available.
And with that... thanks for reading!
